FULL AFTERCARE INTRODUCTION 

Your tattoo is a living work of art — and the way you care for it will shape how it looks for years to come.
Aftercare is not just maintenance; it is the final stage of the artistic process.
Proper care ensures your tattoo heals cleanly, holds its detail, and keeps its contrast and clarity.

This guide will walk you through each step so you feel confident, prepared, and supported as your tattoo becomes a healed, lasting relic of your story.

Instructions 

Day 1

🜂 The First 2 Hours – The Unveiling

Gently remove the protective wrap (nylon bandage) about 2 hours after your session.

  • If it clings, ease it away with lukewarm water—never force.

– The moment the ink meets the air, the relic begins to awaken.

Days 1 to 2​

The Cleansing Ritual

  • With clean hands, gently wash the tattoo with unscented baby soap or antibacterial soap and lukewarm water.

  • No scrubbing—your tattoo is not a dish, nor is it a battlefield.

  • Pat it dry or let it air dry for 15–20 minutes.

  • Repeat this cleansing 3 times a day for the first 48 hours.

  •  🜁 – Water purifies the path. Be gentle, and let it breathe.

Weeks 1 to 4

The Anointing

  • Once your tattoo has fully dried and stopped oozing (after ~48 hours), begin applying a thin layer of your chosen tattoo aftercare balm (e.g., Hustle Butter, Bepanthen, etc.).

  • Always cleanse before applying.

  • Apply 3- 4 times daily, for at least 3–4 weeks.

  • Keep the area uncovered when possible—let it breathe and integrate.

Avoid

at least 4 weeks, do not:

No Sun 

Sun exposure is one of the biggest enemies of a fresh tattoo. UV rays break down the pigments in your skin, causing fading, blurring, and color distortion—especially in the first few weeks when your skin is still healing. Direct sunlight can also dry out the area, slow healing, and increase the risk of irritation or infection.

To keep your tattoo crisp, vibrant, and long-lasting, always protect it from the sun during healing, and apply sunscreen once it’s fully healed.

No exercising 

Exercise increases heat, sweat, and friction — all of which can irritate a fresh tattoo, slow healing, and push out pigment. Sweat carries bacteria that can enter the open skin and cause infection or raised, patchy healing. Movement and stretching can also pull at the skin, especially on areas like ribs, thighs, arms, or stomach, causing the healing lines to distort.

For best results, avoid intense exercise, heavy sweating, or stretching for 7–10 days, or until the tattoo has formed a protective layer and is no longer tender or shiny. Light walking is fine, but anything that makes you sweat heavily or rub against the area should be avoided.

No Swimming, Sauna, or salty - humid air

Fresh tattoos are delicate and still open to the environment. Swimming, saunas, steam rooms, and humid or salty air can all introduce bacteria, pull out pigment, and prevent the skin from sealing properly. Excess moisture softens the healing layer, causing ink loss, irritation, and slower recovery, while chemicals or salt water can lead to fading and patchy spots. Keeping your tattoo dry and clean helps it heal evenly, stay vibrant, and maintain its sharp details.

No Scratching or pulling at scabs - especially if it sticks to clothing or material

As your tattoo heals, it will form light scabs or dry skin. Never scratch, pick, or pull at them, even if they itch or catch on clothing. Removing scabs too early can pull out pigment, cause patchy healing, and slow recovery.

If your tattoo sticks to clothing, bedding, or any material, don’t pull it off. Instead, take the material with you into the shower and gently rinse it with lukewarm water until it loosens and releases on its own. Let the skin shed naturally so your tattoo heals clean, smooth, and vibrant.

No heavy oil or over moisturising 

Using thick oils or too much moisturiser can clog pores, trap bacteria, and soften the healing layer, which may lead to ink loss, irritation, and patchy healing. Fresh tattoos need to breathe, so always apply only a very thin, light layer of aftercare cream — just using two fingertips, even on larger tattoos. The skin should feel lightly hydrated, not shiny or greasy.

Tips and tricks

  • Keep it cool: Fresh tattoos can feel warm. If it starts to feel hot or tight, gently wash it with lukewarm water to reset the skin.

  • Wet wipes when you’re out: Use alcohol-free wet wipes while out and about to clean sweat or dust off the tattoo.

  • Fridge trick: Store your tattoo lotion in the fridge for a soothing cooling effect when applying.

  • Avoid heat: Try to stay in cooler environments and avoid hot rooms, heavy sun, or sweating.

  • Cover from the sun: Keep the tattoo fully covered when outside during the healing phase.

  • Loose clothing: Wear soft, loose fabrics so the tattoo can breathe and avoid friction or sticking.

  • Short rinses if it feels tight: If the tattoo feels dry, tight, or irritated, give it a quick gentle rinse (no scrubbing) and pat dry.

  • Sleep cool: At night, lighter bedding and cooler rooms help prevent sweating and sticking.

  • Stay hydrated: Drinking plenty of water helps your skin heal faster from the inside.
